  • Are you in a Cult?

     Cult

This is a caveat to the post by @SKANLYN. Feel free to check it out yourself ^_^ http://skanlyn.xanga.com/761144834/cults/?page=1&jump=1525235232&leftcmt=1#1525235232

Recently a co-worker and I started a conversation on cults and the general perception they receive. Before I ramble let’s look at the “facts”. Dictionary.com defines a cult as the following:

    1. A particular system of religious worship, especially with the reference to it’s rites and ceremonies.

    2. An instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.

    3. The object of such devotion.

    4. A group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.

    5. Sociology. A group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering on their sacred symbols.

My personal opinion is whenever you hear the word “cult” you think of extremist groups, secret societies and historical atrocities such as the Manson Family, Heaven’s Gate or Aum Shinrikyo. I guess my question is a cult in society’s terms portayed by its true definition or the definition of what to be true? If we take the definition at face value I feel it includes a plethora of organizations and activities that people associate with on a daily basis. If I was to label Christianity or Catholicism as a cult I assume most would immediately get upset. More so because of their pre misconceptions with word cult and not it’s literal definition. The same can be applied to diets, weight loss, entertainment, fraternities/sororities, sports, holidays, “new age” thought etc. The scenario’s are endless….

So when we take the word at face value and apply it to our lives I ask: “Are you in a Cult?”

  • International Celebrity / National Nobody

A line borrowed from a friend who also is a pretty good rapper. Its meaning is interpreted as stated… nothing more nothing less. I feel it applies to me because the “highlights” of my life for the most part have been overseas thus far. I’ve found Love at home and always enjoy going back but nothing can take away the things I’ve experience abroad. For those interested in my exploits feel free to continue reading….

AIT1 Upon joining the military I was immediately taken out of my comfort zone (geographically speaking.) I went to basic training and MOS training in Columbia, South Carolina. From there I was flown to the wonderful winter land of Deutschland. I resided in a smaller town called Wiesbaden right outside of the “Beverly Hills” like city of Mainz. The people and things I experienced there were amazing to say the least. Beautiful women, great public transportation and the legal drinking age of 18 made for an immediate adventure I was willing to undertake. I met genuine people whom many keep in touch with currently. The one thing I did NOT learn here was temperance. If we did anything, it was an all out affair. I arrived in Hanau to in process on December 7th 2006. By New Year’s weekend some new found friends and I were on a train headed to Berlin. I don’t remember much of the trip as I was inebriated the ENTIRE time lol. I do remember gorgeous people, generous drink servings and my first experience with eating duck. On the train ride there we saw a few girls our age sitting in the car ahead of us. After a miniscule deliberation amongst ourselves we decided to go talk to them. Within 5 minutes we were playing spades, re-confirming our train stops and drinking Hennessey and coke (conveniently tucked away in one of their travel bags.) After arriving to Berlin we proceeded to check in to the hotel (we arrived on NYE). Soon after we hit the streets to scout bars and clubs. In Germany you can open carry and I think we had Hennessey and Remy Martin with us to pregame while walking. One of the bottles got busted and someone felt so bad for us they proceeded to offer us champagne. I thought they wanted us each to “sip” but that was considered disrespectful. Instead we devoured a bottle of champagne while we waited for a taxi with strangers. The rest is mostly a blur… I lost my camera, my favorite hat and my ability to EVER have a “normal” New Years. Needless to say I’d do it again. To be noted it was “reported” we went to a New Year’s Celebration where the 90s group “So For Real” was singling live (YouTube Candy Rain.) Somehow we ended up on stage and were the unofficial, official backup singers or something to that effect lol.

    Ger 2  Ger 3  Ger 1

From Germany I was deployed to Iraq with the rest of the 1st Armored Division. Here I was able to mature not only as a Soldier but a Man. I was Raised from a dead level to a living square and continue to square my actions in everything I do. The men and women that share this bond with me aren’t just my brother/sisters in arms. They are my PHAm and SiStars. IN HOC to all my Knights! While deployed I was able to re-enlist for Okinawa Japan. I was always interested in Asia and figured I would capitalize on my chance to continue to experience life abroad. Fortunately for me I did because it ended up being one of the best decisions of my life ^_^

Oki 2 Oki 3 Oki 8  I arrived in Okinawa, Japan May 11th 2009. It was night time when my NCO’s came to pick me up from the Naha airport. When driving back to base all I could remember were “lights”. Route 58 going from Naha to Torii is beautiful especially at night time. During my tour on Oki I experienced a lot. I learned how to ride motorcycles, became an avid bowler, an amateur model, PT stud, True Dreamer and somewhat Enlightened. The people that I met here remain close in many facets in my life. I think it’s something to do with the “island effect”. In my opinion when you’re “stuck” in a place that small the bonds, people and experiences you encounter are stronger and more significant. I can’t confirm why, I just believe it to be true. Okinawa wasn’t as “crazy” as Germany but it definitely had its moments. For some time I lived with my “brother” Perry in a condo about 800 meters from the East China Sea. During the summertime we would work out and go swimming after work. We lived right down the street from the Seawall so we always had good food, good drinks and high spirits. For some time I worked as an MC at a local club called Dragons on gate 2 street. When the crowd was there it was the place to be hands down. I bowled 3 nights a week on various leagues at the Kadena Bowling Center. Bowling wasn’t just about throwing a ball down the lane there…. It was about cheap drinks, slot machines, genuine friendships and bragging rights lol. Seriously it was more like a family than a bowling league. As far as the Military while in Okinawa I originally worked as a Human Resource Specialist at the 505th Quarter Master Battalion. Through steady involvement and good timing I was transferred and became the President of the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers Program on Okinawa. This program focused on Quality of Life for the Soldier, Community Service and Volunteer Opportunities. Hands down the HIGHLIGHT of my career in the Army. I’d be lying if I said I was at my best but I tried and those who worked with me tried as well. Together we brought the program from par to phenomenal and I still remain thankful for all that I was able to experience because of it. If anyone is in the service support your Single Service Member Programs. They thrive because of YOU!

    oki 4 tokyo 4 tokyo 5

While in Okinawa I made multiple trips to the BEST city in Japan: Tokyo. My first trip there was for my 22nd Birthday. I felt I owed it to myself since I turned 20 & 21 in Iraq (to be noted I did get birthday cupcakes and an IPod while deployed ^_^) I stayed at the Hardy Barracks located a few blocks from downtown Roppongi. For $35 a night I had a double room with the works including flat screen T.V., king size bed, enormous bathroom and a heated, magical toilet (you haven’t experienced heaven in a restroom until you use a toilet in Japan lol). Tokyo is AMAZING. There’s always somewhere open and so much to see and do. My first trip basically consisted of walking, drinking, clubbing, drinking, walking, sleeping (shower & repeat). My last few days fell on a Sunday – Tuesday so I figured I would take it easy (although Sunday was my officially my birthday) I head to a local Pizza bar and get a beer while watching a basket ball game. I remember the Lakers were playing and Kobe was sucking as usual lol. In comes a group of Japanese Men/Women and they all were dressed really nice. Me being social as usual decide to ask them why so “spiffy” and it turns out they were celebrating because one of the couples just got married. The entire time I’m speaking to Yuzo as he speaks the most English. I try some of my Japanese and we soon discover each other’s interest of American/Asian women and traveling. Then comes the question…. “Why are you here Davy-san”? I proceed to tell him it’s my birthday. He gets really excited and tells all his friends something in Japanese. They all come up to me and proceed to wish me a Happy Birthday. He then asks me are we considered “friends” in completely heterosexual manner. On my third beer and empty stomach (pizza was just sitting there) I proceed to tell him “Hai Tomodachi. Nunde? (Yes friend, why?). He proceeds to tell me tonight while be a testament to our friendship and that I should trust him because I’m about to get drunk. (To be noted when Asians decide to get drunk they go HAM.) I say “OK” and all his friends line up behind him. One by one they proceed to take a shot with me wishing me a happy birthday. I don’t remember anything pass the 7th or so but he says I went the whole 22… The next morning I wake up in my hotel room with all my valuables and body intact to see a text message from Yuzo that reads “Happy Birthday Dude! You were wasted but we had a blast. Hit me up before you leave so we can meet for lunch”. Needless to say I still keep in touch with Yuzo; he’s a good guy and has as much love for an American Queen as I have for an Asian Goddess.

    Tokyo 3 Tokyo 2 Tokyo 1

My next trips to Tokyo including just as interesting dialogues with people of all kind but the only one that mattered was JG. We met on my second trip to Tokyo through a mutual friend who took me out partying in Roppongi and Shibuya. We started as “friends with benefits” although the “friendship definitely came after the benefits lol. She’s older than me by 8 years and extremely well spoken. With a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, a divorce and child she is definitely wise beyond her years and more than willing to speak her mind. We spoke often and usually ended “debates” with agreeing to disagree but never the less we enjoyed every moment of it and each other. What we had was Beautiful and Unforgettable. Any trip after my second trip to Tokyo was to see her and each one was well worth it. tokyo 7 tokyo 6

I guess that’s enough for now as I’m currently considered “American” again being my current address is in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I eagerly await this coming October-December as I will have plenty to write about as I travel from Richmond VA, to Orlando FL, to Dallas TX, to L.A. CA and ending my “celebratory liberation tour” in Bangkok Thailand for 33 days as I commemorate 25 years of Life, Liberty and Love ^_^ If you’d like more detailed info on this check out my post titled “Processing”.

Have any of you traveled and have crazy stories to boot? Tell me about them!

    Until next time…

  • Internet Infatuation

internetlove Since my “return” to the blogging community I find it necessary to be as “actively engaged” in other peoples blogs as I hope they will mine in the future. One thing that has always been amidst my experience with the internet is the ability to become easily and often infatuated. I choose this word carefully as I feel infatuation is nothing more than  passionate, unintentional inspiration. Dictionary.com says “to inspire or possess with a foolish or unreasoning passion, as of love.” I guess I’m close enough…

I’ve decided instead of trying to determine if this behavior is “normal” I’ll just categorize my experiences and see if anyone goes through something similar. Although this could be a very lengthy discussion I’ve summed up my infatuations in 4 basic categories. The Looker, The Thinker, The Artist and The Opposite. Now for a more in depth look:

The Looker: Usually an extremely attractive person by visual standards. My attraction to them is then perpetuated by their uncanny ability to be authentic and original in the areas of fashion, expression and emotional portrayal through photos.

The Thinker: An extremely articulate and usually knowledgeable individual. Some are happy in solitude while others are extremely social. Both are able to travel extensively in the various recesses and reclusive areas of one’s mind with no fear or map for the matter. Their purpose is the journey, never the destination. They ask questions that no one ask and answer with a voice that can belong to many, not just their own. They draw me in with their greatest weapon. Their mind and the inability to use only 10% of it…

The Artist: True to the title they inspire me through the canvas they choose to create upon. Whether it be poetry, paintings, sculptures or interior design they thrive in an atmosphere of creativity and expression. They often also fall into the category of the “Looker” and “Thinker” which gives me 3 times as many reasons to secretly admire from a far.

The Opposite: My biggest foe and the one I usually fall the hardest for. I’m all about experiencing things new and foreign. The”Opposite” is just that to me. They blog about bands I’ve never heard of, places I never thought to explore and points of view I probably would never see. They’re refreshing, exciting and always interesting to “get to know”.

Although I’ve placed my infatuations in categories a person more times than not will fall into more than one. Also to be noted infatuation is not be confused with sexual attraction. Although it is more than feasible to occur, for me infatuation is an androgynous phenomenon. I’ve come across great men and women alike that have contributed to what is currently”me”. The most recent would be @ZZephyrus hands down…

Do any of you relate and if so, how? Tell me about it!

    Peace & Love

  • Euphoria

Dictionary.com defines it as “a feeling of happiness, confidence, or well-being sometimes exaggerated in pathological states as mania.” In my own words I guess I would call it the usual…. Love. I’m so excited with life on a daily basis I wonder if I’m going crazy or is this what bliss should feel like. Either way it definitely helps when physically placed in a dessert in the middle of nowhere. Ironically a country that has endured so much war has some the most beautiful sunsets and star filled night. I’ll try to expand in another post…. As far as the topic on hand I’ve tried to pinpoint some of the reasons that are attributing to my happiness. Here’s what I have so far…

    1.      Transition: My contract with the military ends 29 November 2012. I’ve said it again and again and personally I don’t think I will say it enough. For me it’s a BIG DEAL. I’ll be 25 this November. A month after graduating high school I joined the Army. I’ve known nothing but this lifestyle for my entire young adult life. Not only do transitions in general excite me but the fact that I actually have a plan and things to look forward to make it even better.

    2.      Companionship: I’m a Lover. It is a well known fact the appreciation and irreplaceable passion I have for people of the opposite sex. I have many female friends and value them greatly but there’s nothing like having something more. I have an acquaintance from high school who I’ve been talking to recently. We never really spoke more than “hi/bye” but it was enough at the time. Fast forward 5 ½ years and I find the courage to start a conversation on Facebook. 3 months from that I ask for a phone number and we began to chat thanks to Google Talk. It’s going on a little over 2 week’s now and I guess the appropriate term would be infatuation. Whatever the proper term I feel refreshed. When I get home she’s going with me to get my septum pierced and taking me to my first West Indian restaurant. I’ve even come up with the ingenious idea to add the days that separate our birthdays, divide by 2 and we will celebrate together in D.C. before I head to Thailand. Without going on and on the point is it feels good. It feels good to show interest in someone and they have a similar interest and intent. It feels great to be able to show 100% of me and be accepted for it. In closing it feels… enough said ^_^

    3.      Communication: I’ve always had a passion for sharing my thoughts through writing. The last few years seem to have flown by and I’ve failed to write for any consistent amount of time. I’ve pledged to write at least once a day unless I have no internet connection. In the event that happens I still maintain a journal on my laptop. Not only does it feel good to write it allows to me keep track of what’s really going on in my life. The things that matter, the things that don’t. The people who influence on a daily basis and even those who do so without ever knowing. Creatively this has “re-kindled” my poetic flame as well. I don’t think I will become famous with my work but I do believe I have a way with words that paint beautiful pictures at times. Poetry enables me to share and communicate with others as well as self. On the journey of unconditional Love communication not only leads to insight, but forgiveness. Learning to forgive not only others, but myself starts with being able to openly acknowledge what I subcontioustly/consciously ignore. More times than not this acknowledgement comes from my poems when all else fails.

    4.      Xanga: yes this wonderful site has and continues to help expand my happiness! There are a lot of interesting and knowledgeable souls amongst us here. Whether I agree or not is meaningless, the fact that there are people who share unconditionally is humbling and inspiring. It makes me want to be a better me. Even more a better blogger so when I share others can find something of value as well. I’d also like to give a special shout out to my Xanga friends. Although I only have a few they made my day just by clicking “accept” ^_^ @SoundofSapphire , @TimeHasNoMeaning , @HushNowLuv , and @Life_of_Nora.  An even bigger shout out to @This_puzzle_called_life for posting my first comment. With her acknowledgement I felt a part of the community again (I’ve been a member since 2006 but pretty much was on hiatus from 2009-2012)

All in all I’m happy, healthy and patiently awaiting my return to the US of A. For all of my brothers/sisters in arms I encourage to stay motivated and when things get dismal remember the reason you signed up for. Whatever the reason, let it uplift you in your low times until you can return to the place (physically, mentally and spiritually) you belong.

    Peace. Love. Light.

  • Over My Dead Body

I think I Loved everybody in world last year except Self… Fuck it I was low though

Yet the impression of my depression is a wound that’s finally healed so going back is a no-no

This won’t be the last time I leave the States

I hope all the Friends that I leave in place, remain true to the bond that we share because try as I may the memories are hard to erase

I apply the things I’ve learned through all of life’s lessons

Realized being stagnant is worst than regression

Chase dreams with an optimism and intensity

Seen from a blind eye probably resembles an aimless aggression

Unless you were watching over me you wouldn’t understand

My experience comes from the journey, not just the plans

Found love everywhere in between the US and Japan

Loved, Lost and Learned. I’m just happy I can

Through a focus on Love I remain in bliss

I feel rain drops and swear I stole an Angel’s kiss

Been to the hottest night clubs around the globe

Yet nothing compares to the Light of a heart when it’s whole

Some have the audacity to call me “weird”

I’d rather live “out of tolerance” than ever again in fear

It’s so crazy whenever I look into the stars, all I can see is arrows

So I guess my destiny’s clear

If I die on the front lines, I hope family and friends remember to celebrate

We all play our position and I feel I wasn’t put here to “last”, only encourage and elevate

Be cognizant of those watching from afar

You never know who’s scoping you. We’re all considered Stars

I’m surrounded by Royalty no exceptions

So of course we wear Crowns  and carry Sceptre’s… “& everything is alright”

  • Google Talk

Throughout the past week I’ve been able to call far and wide (throughout the continental U.S. of course) thanks to the wonderfully patriotic people at Google. Although I’m sure that they don’t feel they are actually doing America a favor by allowing Google Talk to be free throughout 2012 I have the strong opinion that Military members and Families easily make up 70% of its usage. With cell phones, Skype and apps such as Viber I know I never took the time to log on to a computer to call people through a headset. Fortunately for me in my time of patriotic solitude from society I can still call people from a legible phone number. I’ll ignore the fact that my number resembles that of a tele-marketer’s and continue to remain in bliss. For those who I would like to talk to who don’t live in the continental U.S. I hope you can figure out how to use Viber so I can call you. Fortunately for all of us there is always email and Facebook. In closing I would like anyone who works for Google to know I’ve declared the 2nd Sunday in April “Google Talk Day”. If this happens to conflict with Easter yearly I apologize in advance for any unnecessary conflict.

It’s 6AM in Afghanistan and I’m on my 3rd RipIt (military grade Redbull) of the “evening.”
